The Dallas Cowboys have apparently decided on a wide receiver, and it’s Michael Gallup over Amari Cooper.
The Cowboys enter the off-season at about $21 million over the salary cap. As fate would have it, Cooper is slated to cost $20 million in cap space each of the next three seasons if he’s on the roster.

Dallas may entertain a trade but is reportedly prepared to cut Amari Cooper free, allowing him to choose his next destination. If he’s released by March 20, the Cowboys don’t need to pay Cooper, and they get back $16M in cap space.

There are a number of teams that could use a player like Cooper, but fewer who would afford the $20 million annual haul he’s scheduled to get for three more seasons under his current deal.

The Dolphins, for several reasons, make a lot of sense as the favorite on these NFL odds. Miami has made it clear the off-season’s top priority is to add more weapons for QB Tua Tagovailoa, whether that’s with a booster run game, WR help, or a pass-catching TE. No team has more available cap space than the Miami Dolphins. Add to it a possible personal incentive for Cooper, who grew up in Miami and went to high school in the city.

The EaglesColtsJets, and Bears want to add support to their QBs, and each has the money to make it work. The LionsPatriots, and Browns, as well as title contenders, Packers, and Chiefs, could use Cooper.

If Cooper wants to get paid his fair market value, cap space would require several other moves to make it work.
