The 2023 MLB All-Star game has arrived!

Home Run Derby Recap

Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. won the 2023 Home Run Derby, defeating Rays OF Randy Arozarena 25-23 in the Finals to take home the trophy on Monday night in Seattle.

Guerrero handily defeated Dodgers OF Mookie Betts in the first round, hitting 26 homers to Betts’ 11. After hometown Mariners star Julio Rodriguez set a single-round record in the first round with 41 homers (defeating Mets 1B Pete Alonso, 41-21), Guerrero defeated Rodriguez in the second round 21-20 to advance to the Finals.

Arozarena reached the Finals by defeating fellow Cuban-born Rangers slugger Adolis Garcia, 24-17, in the first round, and ousting the number one overall seed in the Derby, fellow Cuban-born White Sox slugger Luis Robert Jr., in the second round, 35-22.

Guerrero hit his 25 homers before Arozarena had his chance to win the Derby. Still, in the final seconds of bonus time, Arozarena was unable to catch Guerrero, giving Vladdy his first-ever Home Run Derby win.

With the win, Guerrero formed the first-ever father-son duo to win the Derby, as his father, Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero Sr., won the Home Run Derby in 2007. Guerrero is the first Blue Jay to win the Derby in franchise history.
