The Baltimore Orioles have acquired former National League Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for prospects Joey Ortiz and DL Hall, as well as the 34th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft.

Burnes, 29, won the NL Cy Young with the Brewers in the 2021 season. He is a three-time All-Star, and former All-MLB First Team member (2021). This past season, Burnes went 10-8 with a 3.39 ERA, 127 ERA+, 3.81 FIP, 1.069 WHIP, and 9.3 K/9 in 193.2 innings pitched. It was a rough season for Burnes’ standards as before 2023, he had recorded an ERA under three for four straight seasons. Despite the disappointing 2023 season, he should be a big boost for an Orioles team that needed to add an ace to their 101-win team.

Ortiz, 25, is a shortstop who was the Orioles’ sixth-best prospect before the trade. Ortiz made his major league debut in 2023, playing in 15 games for Baltimore this season. In those 15 games, Ortiz recorded seven hits, four RBIs, and four runs. In 88 games for Triple-A Norfolk, Ortiz hit .321, with a .378 OBP, .507 SLG, .885 OPS, nine homers, and 58 RBI.

Hall, 25, is a left-handed pitcher who was previously the Orioles’ fifth-best prospect according to The Athletic. Hall made his major league debut in 2022 and appeared in 18 games for Baltimore in 2023. In 2023, Hall went 3-0, with a 3.26 ERA, 23 strikeouts, a 1.190 WHIP, and 10.7 K/9 in 19.1 innings pitched. Hall also pitched at two levels in the minors during the 2023 season, going 2-2 with a 3.98 ERA, 78 strikeouts, a 1.365 WHIP, and 13.5 K/9 in 52 innings pitched.

With the Orioles’ new ownership, fans are hoping the trade for Burnes indicates more of a willingness to invest in the team year in and year out. The Brewers meanwhile get a couple of pieces for the future in exchange for their ace who only had one final year of control on his contract.
