Translating the Statements Made at the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline

One of the most consequential days of the rest of the MLB season is in the rearview mirror.
Both the moves and non-moves are a loud statement to the rest of the league, the fans, the players, and more regarding how they feel about their team going forward.
However, no GM or president is going to outright tell you what they’re trying to say with what they’re doing because they have money to make and around 40% of the season left.
No one has mathematically been eliminated yet! Please keep coming and buying our concessions and Fanatics products!
We’re going to break down what the statements are literally translated to, similar to the iconic Key & Peele Obama “Anger-Translator” sketch, where Luther, Obama’s anger translator, decodes what he’s trying to say. GMs and owners will give us fodder such as “there’s still a lot of season left!” that are pure PR 101 moves.
Let’s translate their decisions to better evaluate what teams were trying to say this trade deadline.
Tampa Bay Rays // “You should never buy another player’s jersey from us ever again, but enjoy the fun regular seasons.”
The Rays have been one of the most consistently successful regular season teams, with 5 consecutive postseason appearances and two World Series appearances since 2008, all while spending little to no money and playing in a ballpark that players and fans complain about as an outdated dome far away from what would be a great sports town. They’re able to win by being smarter than you and have gotten the “you don’t trade with the Rays!” because they trade away their superstars for prospects you haven’t heard of and, years later, end up being superstars.
It’s simply not a model to create fans or any loyalty whatsoever.
While on the outside looking in on the playoffs this season, they traded away Zach Eflin, Isaac Paredes, Jason Adam, Amed Rosario, and one of the most beloved players in all of baseball, Randy Arozarena. Despite having a down year, Randy would have been the perfect “build a statue” candidate player as a cult icon, but they sold while his value was high for prospects that may pan out before they’re traded away again.
The one player they committed to, ironically, Wander Franco, won’t ever play baseball again because of committing horrifying acts. Still, there is absolutely no reason for fans to feel any attachment to any player on a team (that will be competent and successful because they’re smart!) before they trade them for diamonds in the rough. Tyler Glasnow, Willy Adames, and Blake Snell were the build up to this, where we thought Randy was a non-negotiable.
Apparently, no bar is too low when it comes to emotional attachment in Tampa. But hey, enjoy the future new ballpark renderings!
New York Yankees // “We’re cool and competent, Juan Soto! We promise!”
The New York Yankees traded for a future Hall of Famer in Juan Soto this offseason in a contract year to sell him on “the Yankee Way” and hopefully lock him up and put him in pinstripes for life. All was well through the first two months of the season as he and Aaron Judge have been the Bash Bros 2.0, but they have since plateaued with a 10-16 record in July, and Soto literally said to the media, “Well, you can’t win with two players!”
Every offseason and trade deadline, Yankee fans on social media begin photoshopping every massive target in pinstripes as if they were preemptively born to be honored and grace the franchise with 27 rings. But they’re also old school, don’t allow facial hair, and have been one of the most strict franchises in all of sports when it comes to the clubhouse; it’ll be interesting to see how that impacts Soto’s decision.
The Yankee rules haven’t stopped them from acquiring players with bold personalities in the past, like Josh Donaldson or currently Marcus Stroman, who previously had animosity towards the team, and it didn’t stop this deadline when they traded for Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Marlins. Jazz is flamboyant with customized gloves and cleats, and he graced the MLB The Show video game but has been labeled as one of the most overrated players because some believe he prematurely has been marketed as a star with a plethora of injuries, a .250 average, and no postseason success. He oozes confidence and will be the first to tell you about it.
Jazz has the personality to be a star and is the antithesis of the “Yankee way.” Maybe a change of scenery to one of the premier organizations in sports will be a good fit for both, as Jazz will instantly be the third-best hitter in the lineup, with four homers already in his first stretch of games.
New York Mets // “We may have given up on trying to be a competent, buttoned-up team last year, but we’re going to acquire as many fun personalities as possible.”
The Mets sold their team last year after a lucrative spending offseason fell apart, and Max Scherzer openly told the media that the front office was aiming for “maybe 2025 or 2026.”
The Mets were one of the worst teams in baseball the first month of the season and were possibly going to trade away cult icon Pete Alonso before his free agency.
Then pride month happened, and Grimac threw out the first pitch.
The Mets fans who were previously miserable and suffered everything short of a curse have been having the time of their lives as they’ve vaulted into the NL Wild card spot, are dressing up as Grimace in the stands, and Jose Iglesias has a hit song called OMG that is a certified hit as they’re all having the time of their lives with the best record in the month of July. With the addition of Jesse Winker, the New York native who previously had a rivalry with the fans by taunting them and getting a picture with a fan holding a sign saying “Jesse Winker is a straight up B**ch” sign, they might not be a World Series favorite, but from having Grimace, a pop star, and now an anti-hero, this is a personality-rich team that is maybe the most fun roster in many Mets seasons from a personality angle with some possible magic up their Purple Grimace sleeves.
Seattle Mariners and Cleveland Guardians // “Hey, you can’t say that we didn’t try!”
Both the Guardians and the Mariners are in a different state of urgency regarding their playoff chances.
The Guardians fans know that they have a team that’s capable of winning the World Series if everything goes right, but historically, they’re a small market team that operates very cautiously rather than making a move to take them over the top. They did add a bat in Lane Thomas from the Nationals as a former All-Star with some wheels from a middling-to-bad team, and Alex Cobb, who has yet to throw a pitch this year, but one could only dream of what the team would be like if they had a front office that operated without taking half measures and strike while the iron is hot with one of the youngest rosters in a very winnable American League.
The Mariners were in first place in the AL West with what is firmly the best starting rotation in baseball, but they have the worst offense in baseball, aside from the White Sox. The lead has evaporated as Houston Michael Meyers-ed their way back to the top to catch them. There may not be a more miserable first-place team.
Adding Randy Arozarena and Justin Turner, incredible vibes guys and leaders, to invigorate their anemic offense certainly will improve it. Still, it may not be enough given how dead the rest of the lineup has been previously in a ballpark where other sluggers like Teoscar Hernandez and Jesse Winker have arrived and put up career-low numbers.
You can’t say either of them did nothing to try and improve, though!
Los Angeles Dodgers // “Yes, we are still the Dodgers.”
The Dodgers, who spent a billion dollars this offseason, developed talent seemingly better than anyone else and have the assets to go out and get anyone they want, made even more moves, and covered up the only chinks in their armor. They needed versatility because they knew how to maximize talent better than anyone else, and they started pitching. They addressed both of those because they could go out and do it.
Tommy Edman is a Swiss Army knife that will be able to be placed wherever it is needed in their banged-up infield. Kevin Kiermaier is a defensive savant they can put in the outfield. Michael Kopech has always had the arm talent but has never been in a winning situation for it to be optimized, and he is now. Finally, they capped it off by adding the most predictable addition ever, Jack Flaherty, an LA-born-and-raised starting pitcher who was likely the crown jewel of the market.
Oh, by the way, they’ll have both Tyler Glasnow and Mookie Betts back by the end of the year after just getting Clayton Kershaw.
They’re the Dodgers, in case you forgot.
Miami Marlins // “Enjoy the Florida Panthers, Miami Dolphins, Miami Heat, and South Beach until 2031!”
Unlike the Angels, Rockies, and White Sox, which are bottom-feeders that continue to hold talented players hostage, the Marlins are bad. They admitted they were bad by essentially offloading their entire team. They now only have one person on the roster, Jesus Sanchez, making over one million dollars on the team in this fire sale for teenagers. The billboard with all of the faces on their postseason advertisement from last year is essentially just Sandy Alcantara.
But hey, when these prospects finally get to come up years down the line, at least they capitalized and ADMITTED by looking in the mirror that they were bad and could get something in return.
